Although concrete is one of the most important building materials, it places high demands on every fastening due to different strengths, cracking and loads. Traditional systems such as bolt anchors are tried and tested, but require several work steps and cannot be removed without leaving residue. This is precisely where we rely on the concrete screw: it is screwed directly into the drill hole, cuts its own thread and enables a secure connection that can even be removed again if required.

When it comes to execution, time is of the essence. When working overhead or in confined spaces, every unnecessary installation step can slow down the work and cause physical strain. The concrete screw significantly reduces this effort, as screwing it in is enough to create a load-bearing connection. As soon as the screw head is in place, installation is complete – without spreading or retightening. This makes it particularly economical to use, especially in installations with many fixing points. Even in challenging substrates such as cracked concrete, prestressed concrete hollow core slabs, masonry or natural stone, the TOGE TSM High Performance provides a reliable hold and therefore covers a wide range of typical applications – from routes and rails to railings and structural fixings.

Our technology reveals its performance in detail, as the TSM concrete screw undergoes a two-stage hardening process: The screw body is given a basic hardness for stability, while the tip is induction hardened so that it is harder than the concrete and precisely pre-cut. This ensures easy screwing in with a high load-bearing capacity. Corrosion-resistant stainless steel versions are available for outdoor use, while galvanized versions offer cost-effective solutions for indoor use. In combination with different head shapes, users will always find the right option – both technically and visually.

Safety is our top priority. That is why our high-performance screws undergo extensive testing procedures in accordance with the European Technical Assessment (ETA). Among other things, we simulate real crack widths and repeated load cycles to ensure that the screw will perform reliably for decades. At the same time, we are continuously driving forward further developments, such as attempts to reduce borehole cleaning in order to further simplify assembly processes. We are also focusing on new areas of application: the planned approval of the Multiground concrete screw for wood-concrete connections or solid masonry will enable customers to cover more applications with one screw in the future, thereby simplifying warehousing and procurement.

The Baden-Württemberg 2023 Environmental Technology Award in the “Material Efficiency” category goes to the Würth Group’s REINFORCE AC product. The system – a joint development by Würth and TOGE Dübel – allows aerated concrete roofs to be subsequently reinforced so that they have up to 80% more load-bearing capacity.

“Load-bearing roof surfaces are a basic prerequisite for equipping buildings with photovoltaic systems – and therefore important for the energy transition. REINFORCE AC from Würth ensures that roofs can be upgraded with little effort,” says State Secretary Dr. Andre Baumann.

Aerated concrete roofs make it difficult to install photovoltaics

The installation of photovoltaic systems on existing roofs promotes the energy transition and avoids new land consumption. But the systems are heavy. Industrial buildings in particular, which are 25 years old or older, often have roofs made of aerated concrete, the load-bearing capacity of which is not designed for the installation of a PV system. Until now, these roofs had to be dismantled if necessary and reconstructed from a more stable building material, such as concrete or steel. This procedure resulted in several tonnes of construction waste and newly produced concrete.

 

Subsequent reinforcement against waste of resources

With REINFORCE AC, the Würth Group has developed a system with which the load can be distributed across the roof surface. This is possible using screws and a reinforcing mortar that is pressed into the air capillaries of the aerated concrete. While the screws already support the existing reinforcement of the aerated concrete, they are used to anchor GRP or aluminium rods to the underside of the roof. They serve as additional external reinforcement and bending tensile reinforcement. This allows up to 80 per cent additional load-bearing capacity to be placed on the roof. REINFORCE AC was developed together with Toge Dübel GmbH & Co. KG, a subsidiary of the Würth Group, at the Reinhold Würth Innovation Centre CURIO.

From the ZiE to the general building authority approval

The solution is already available on the market; projects receive approval in individual cases (ZiE). General building authority approval from the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBT) is expected by summer 2024. “The special thing about our reinforcement solution is that it can be easily realised retrospectively and during operation. This saves companies considerable costs because they don’t need a new roof.
